Ausmuteants

Ausmuteants are a group from Geelong, Australia combining cheap guitars and thrift-store electronics into a blend of snotty and tense synth-driven punk. As a duo of friends obsessed with early synth punk and new wave, Jake and Billy began making tapes at home. Soon Ausmuteants expanded to a more conventional four-piece lineup, and four increasingly sophisticated and melodic albums followed, culminating in the conceivably prophetic 'Band Of The Future' in 2016. The band members spend their downtime making politically charged stencil art, promoting sustainable farming and fishing, and thinking they are top fucking shit for having a record on Goner.

Bitchin Bajas

Bitchin Bajas began in 2010 as a solo side project for Cave's guitarist Cooper Crain. Equally psychedelic but decidedly less aggressive than Crain's primary band, Bitchin Bajas chooses textural exploration over rhythmic force. The project quickly became prolific in its release of music, and was expanded to a trio with the inclusion of Mahjongg's Dan Quinlivan and Rob Frye (also of Cave). Lately they have been releasing on indie giant Drag City, and collaborating with like minds as diverse as Natural Information Society, Bonny "Prince" Billy and filmmaker Olivia Wyatt.

Black Tusk

There was blood, and maybe a few tears, too, but more than anything, Black Tusk was born from sweat. Formed in 2005 by three lifelong friends, the Savannah band welded together a three-pronged vocal attack, dirty punk, sludgy heavy metal, and a big fat dose of Motorhead to create what they called “swamp metal.” After the tragic death of bass player Athon in 2014, the remaining duo made the difficult decision to soldier on and carry on in his memory. Black Tusk has lived through the kind of hardship and heartbreak that would cripple a lesser band, but it’s that dedication, and gumption, and pure bullheaded stubbornness that’s taken them around the world and beyond.

Brant Bjork

Brant Bjork delivers lush Stoner Rock with balls of steel, winged by vivid solo guitars and his creaking whiskey tinged voice. Once behind the drums for legendary Desert Rock bands Kyuss and Fu Manchu, Brant has since turned himself into a far-out reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix, on a nearly constant world tour to deliver fuzzy awesomeness to the masses. His live show amounts to controlled madness hitting just the right spot between trippy and doomy, smooth and sludgy. The recent live album 'Mankind Woman is a surprisingly funky slice of soulful rock, but nothing beats the pure thrill of seeing the man perform in the flesh.

Cfm - Charles Francis Moothart

If you’re a garage rock junkie, chances are you’ve heard Charles Moothart shred—hard. After being heavily involved in the garage rock scene around Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin, Moothart stepped into the spotlight with the solo alias CFM (short for Charles Francis Moothart). Following a breakup in 2016, he retreated to his home studio and wrote the album 'Still Life of Citrus & Slime'. A year later he returned with 'Dichotomy Desaturated', another heady collection of Nuggets-leaning songs. While both albums were solo efforts, Moothart assembled a touring band of outsiders including high school friend Michael Anderson, along with Tyler Frome and powerhouse drummer Thomas Alvarez (Audacity).

Church of misery

Church of Misery hold the distinction of being one of the first doom metal bands to emerge from Japan. Founded by bass player Tatsu Mikami back in 1995, it reflected his musical inspirations – traditional doom metal like Saint Vitus and Black Sabbath, and the early seventies doom rock in the mould of Leaf Hound and Gun. Numerous line-up changes couldn't prevent the band from establishing a solid reputation in the Western doom scene, and in fact it has kept their sound evolving and sounding fresh over more than 20 years. Now with Mikami as the only remaining original member, the Church has in fact never sounded more alive.

Colour Haze

Formed in the mid-nineties, Colour Haze is one of the oldest German stoner outfits, and one of the flagships of the local scene. Emerging from a sound heavily influenced by Black Sabbath & Grand Funk Railroad on their first records, they evolved from a heavy to a more melodic sound. The lineup has remained unchanged for nearly 20 years: Stefan (guitar & vocals), Manfred (drums) and Philipp (bass) form a power trio that has consistently won the hearts and ears of a loyal fanbase that is ever growing. Since 2003, the band has been releasing all their albums through Stefan's own label “Elektrohasch Schallplatten”, making them a true DIY force.

Double Veterans

Founded by singer-composer Lee Swinnen, the Belgian threesome Double Veterans get inspired in equal measure by the great psychedelic bands of the '60s and '70s as they are by the contemporary scene. Their debut EP ‘The Brotherhood of Scary Hair and Homemade Religion’ and following singles introduced the world to their unrefined but catchy brand of garage rock, but the full debut album ‘Space Age Voyeurism’ (2016) showed a band quickly growing into a versatile and idiosyncratic sound. After a brief sabbath to explore other musical interests, the Veterans are now back with a whole number of nefarious plans up their sleeve!

Elder

Starting out in a small town in coastal Massachusetts as a shared musical passion between three long-time friends, Elder is the definition of a work in progress. With each new release, the group continues to meld the familiar sounds of Sleep‘s colossal riffage with an ever-evolving vision of soaring melodies and sonic soundscapes. This continuous quest for musical adventure has received praise from the traditional stoner/doom crowd, as well as reaching listeners outside this often insular scene. Their audience will find themselves locked into the trio’s lengthy epics, which toe the line between the chasms of classic stoner metal and mindblowing psychedelia.

Endless boogie

For a long time, Endless Boogie was considered "the best-kept secret in New York's rock scene". Starting out in 1997 as a jam band between a couple of Matador Records employees and the excentric rare vinyl dealer Paul Major, they played their first live show in 2001 opening for Pavement's Stephen Malkmus. Since then, their formula has roughly stayed the same: take the most infectious riff you can find, repeat it ad infinitum, and have Paul recount fragmented tall stories from his rock'n'roll past, punctuated by his scorching solo guitar playing. Endless Boogie do exactly what their name implies: this is one rocking party that never ends.

Eyehategod

Formed in 1988, EHG turned upside down the 90’s underground pioneering a unique sound copied by thousands in their wake, blending muddy riffs and sturdy rhythmic work with Mike Williams’ deranged poetry and an intimidating barricade of noise and feedback. Since then, they've survived line-up shuffles, label hassles, a short-lived split and the loss of original drummer Joey Lacaze in 2013. And after almost three decades of creating some of the most corrosive, vile music known to man, EyeHateGod still hasn't lost the piss and vinegar that fueled them back in '88. Now, with Mike fresh out of surgery, the band shows no sign of slowing down, touring intensively and preparing a new album.

Flat Worms

An L.A. post-punk threesome with an enviable pedigree: Will Ivy (Dream Boys, Wet Illustrated, Bridez), Justin Sullivan (Kevin Morby, The Babies) and Tim Hellman (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Sic Alps) certainly got more than enough garage rock credentials under their belt to grab your attention. Nevertheless, Flat Worms is more than just a pet project, as a bunch of 7" records on Volar and an album on Castle Face should prove. A little Wipers, a little Wire, and a lot of late-capitalist era anxious energy — fans of classic SST / Homestead /Touch And Go Records will find much to love here.

Follakzoïd

Föllakzoid are a psych-pop group from Santiago, Chile, formed around bassist/vocalist Juan Pablo Rodrigues, synth player Alfredo Thiermann, and drummer Diego Lorca. The three met during childhood and started playing together officially in 2008. During their first practice, they jammed on a song in free-form style for over two hours, and this reliance on chemistry became a defining characteristic of their live shows. Heavily informed by the heritage of the ancient music of the Andes, the band has learned to integrate this influence with contemporary sounds of their times, creating a rich yet minimal atmosphere.

Goggs

Ty Segall Ex-Cult's Chris Shaw decided they were going to start a band together when their bands played together in 2013. The band had been in the planning stages for a long time but finally came together in 2015 when they convened in Ty's Los Angeles studio to record an album. Cory Hanson (Wand), Charles Moothart (Fuzz) and Mikal Cronin all got involved at some point. After the addition of Michael Anderson on bass, GØGGS returned in 2018 with 'Pre Strike Sweep', adding a new level of primordial anxiety to their already catastrophic symphony. Here's one West Coast garage supergroup you don't want to miss.

John Garcia

Kyuss, Slo Burn, Unida, Hermano, Vista Chino... after years of fronting famous and infamous desert rock outfits, John Garcia's name has almost become synonymous with the genre. Although the man himself rather wouldn't call what he does “desert rock.” Instead he considers it all to be rock ’n’ roll with different manifestations, which is why he showed up in guest appearances for acts as diverse as Orange Goblin and Karma To Burn, to The Crystal Method and Belgium's own Arsenal. After a more intimate solo affair, the man now has a new plan for 2019: a band project called 'John Garcia And The Band Of Gold' that will take him back where it all started: sweat-dripping hard rocking grooves.

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds

The gigantic tone of Kid Congo Powers' open-tuned guitar is one of the more readily identifiable sounds in the history of underground rock. Kikagaku Moyo (Japanese for "geometric patterns") are a Tokyo-based psychedelic rock band whose sound incorporates elements of Krautrock, Indian ragas, and acid folk. They released a series of records on Guruguru Brain, a label founded by two members of the band to promote Eastern psychedelic music in the West. With heavy, crushing jams balanced by more contemplative moments, Kikagaku Moyo recalls Japanese psych groups like Acid Mothers Temple and Ghost, as well as their predecessors such as Far East Family Band and the Flower Travellin' Band. Brewing up a heady mixture of high-spirited rhythm & blues, real-gone psychedelia, and middle-finger-flipping garage rock, King Khan has earned an international reputation as one of the wildest showmen in underground rock. Whether playing with the all-freaks powerhouse that is The Shrines, designing a deck of Tarot cards (Jodorowsky approved!), scoring William Burroughs' archival spoken word recordings or embarking on any other highly extravagant project he will think up next, King Khan is a versatile true artist who just also happens to have a knack for entertaining the shit out of any audience that is put in front of him.

Left Lane Cruiser

This whiskey fueled two man frenzy of blues-driven rock’n’roll noise straight from Fort Wayne, Indiana will hit you like a shock wave and show you a foot-stompin’ good time. The raw blues power duo of Joe Evans (slide guitar and vocals) and Pete Dio (drums) have learned their craft by playing at house parties and corner streets, and rehearsing in a heatless garage. The result is a sound unlike any other, their personal take on the North Mississippi Hill Country sound. “Let your soul drive what you do” is the premise of their music, and the most recent album 'Claw Machine Wizard' may be the best testament of that motto yet.

Les Filles de Illighadad

Fatou Seidi Ghali and Alamnou Akrouni are "Les Filles de Illighadad", named after their tiny hometown in a remote part of Niger near the border with Mali. They sing and play a traditional Tuareg drum called the tende, which is also the name of a repertoire of traditional Tuareg folk songs. But it is the distinctive acoustic and electric guitar playing by Fatou that catches eyes and ears all over the world. After a photograph of her playing at a wedding went viral online (female Tuareg guitarists being rare), Christopher Kirkley of Sahel Sounds tracked her down and produced the group's first two albums for the label.

Male Gaze

San Francisco-based indie rock group Male Gaze look back to the darker side of new wave for inspiration, with liberal amounts of jangle pop, gnarly psychedelia, and post-punk angularity in the mix as well. Over three albums for Castle Face Records in three years, the band moved from a trio to a quartet, and then back again. What remains constant is the growling vocal of Matt Jones, backed by a pack of stripped-down, thick and nasty guitars and a rabid, sinister rhythm section. Subtle they may not be, but sometimes that direct approach is just what you need to have your lights punched out.

Mdou Moctar first found underground success in 2008, when his first release "Ana" was all the rage on the pirate mp3 networks of West Africa. In 2012, Mdou relocated from his native village to Agadez, the center of Niger’s guitar scene, and formed his band. Over the past years, he has become well known on the international circuit, playing high energy electrified music in festivals and clubs across Europe and North America.

Meatbodies

Chad Ubovich began ripping through the rock scene in 2011 as guitarist for Mikal Cronin and later playing bass in FUZZ with Ty Segall. In between tours, he spent his time recording and playing shows around Los Angeles under the name Chad and the Meatbodies. In 2012, Ty released a tape with Chad’s bedroom recordings on his GOD? Records imprint. The release was well received, and subsequently In The Red took notice of Chad’s crunching, grinding sound and added his band, now simply called Meatbodies to their roster. Over the course of 2 albums, he has emerged as not only a mean riff dealer, but also an accomplished songsmith.

A psych-blasted sludge-metal trio based in the traditionally black metal-oriented city of Gothenburg, Swedish doom rock unit Monolord was founded in 2013 around the talents of Thomas V Jäger (vocals, guitars), Esben Willems (drums), and Mika Häkki (bass). The band's 2014 debut LP, 'Empress Rising', was released via Riding Easy Records. It drew praise from a host of online zines, and quickly rose to the top of Bandcamp's doom charts. Moon Duo

San Francisco's Moon Duo was formed in 2009 by Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson (Wooden Shjips). Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Throughout the years have consistently expanded on their core sound of motoric beats, synth bass and Ripley's space guitar. This culminated in 2017's double concept album 'Occult Architecture', based on the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang, light vs. dark. As disorienting as the music can be, the eye-scorching visual live show takes it to a whole new outer dimension.

Morgan Delt

Los Angeles-based neo-psych sorcerer Morgan Delt first appeared in early 2013 with the limited-edition tape release 'Psychic Death Hole'. Six songs were enough to establish a unique sound that sounded like a whirlwind vision of all the best '60s acid-tripping jangle rock bands rolled into one, the madness offset by some surprisingly tight songwriting. In 2014, the tape was expanded into a self-titled debut album. After signing with Sub Pop, Delt self-recorded the follow-up 'Phase Zero', a less frantic but still intoxicating invocation of classic west coast psychedelia. Meanwhile, Delt has surrounded himself with a tight band to translate his peculiar psychedelic vision to the stage.

Diehard exponents of the noble art of heavy metal since 1995, the London-based quartet have spent the last two decades steadily but surely establishing themselves as one of the UK’s most loved and respected bands. Starting out as one of the most important UK doom bands of the '90s, Goblin has been adding more and more influences to their unique sound, resulting in some of their best work being done over the last few years. 2018's 'The Wolf Bites Back' once again proved there's still a lot of creative fury in the Goblin's spirit.

Their self-titled debut EP was released digitally in 2013, and after seeing the band live Castle Face Records' John Dwyer was quick to scoop them up and release their next album 'Pools' on his own label. He has plenty of nice stuff to say about them: "they are captivating, they are odd, they make strange and interesting choices…futuristic and yet drawn from the same sonic sludge that all mankind derives from". for fans of Screamers, Suicide, Chrome, and yes, even a hint of Birthday Party.

Radio Moscow

Radio Moscow was named after an obscure 60s garage punk novelty single. The power trio led by Stratocaster genius Parker Griggs have found THE formula: Crunching, heavy Sabbath-style chords topped with fiery solos that can legitimately be called Hendrixian. Radio Moscow plant their flag firmly in the territory where psychedelic rock and cranked-up blues meet. The sound is unabashedly retro, so it’s easy to see how it caught the ear of the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who produced their 2007 self-titled debut. A relentless touring schedule and a slew of killer albums have earned the band an enthusiastic following throughout the years.

Samsara blues experiment

'Samsara' - the Sanskrit word for 'journey' that denotes the endless life cycle of death and rebirth. 'Blues' - the fundament where it all comes from. And finally, 'Experiment' - every show is a new adventure, for the band as well as their audience. For ten years now, the Berlin-based trio has passionately blended blues-infused heavy psych, stoner and space rock in extended jams that sometimes venture into hypnotic krautrock territory. Quite fittingly, they have named their DIY record label 'Electric Magic', because that is truly their trade. Throughout the years, they've weaved their psychedelic spell over crowds all over Europe, USA, South-America, and all the way to New Zealand.

Stoned jesus

Ukraine might not be the most obvious place to start a doom metal band, but that is exactly what Igor Sidorenko decided to do when he was stuck in a rut back in 2007. The band's progress since then has proven him right: from their humble beginnings in the local metal underground, Stoned Jesus has moved on to become one of the current scene darlings. It might have something to do with the tight songwriting, solidly based in traditional stoner doom but touched by Igor's many influences and prog background. No wonder Napalm Records wanted a piece of that, releasing their breakthrough album 'Pilgrims' in 2018.

For their 19th full-length album, the band formerly known as Thee Oh Sees (and The Oh Sees and OCS and Orinoka Crash Suite and Orange County Sound) are now just the "Oh Sees". That being said, the twin drummer setup just keeps on doing what it does best: providing an explosive backdrop for whatever out-there sound Dwyer comes up with - be it garage, psychrock, manic folk or spaced-out drones. The result is one of the most exciting live bands you can witness nowadays.

Even with the mother of all hangovers, the band nailed a full album of eight songs in 2 days. The second album topped that with 11 songs recorded in the same amount of time. Throughout his prolific career, he has constantly shifted projects and moods, ranging from eclectic pop to fuzzed-out noise to acoustic folk. On his latest couple of albums, he seems to have boiled down all these influences into a style that is unmistakably his own, while effortlessly moving across the musical spectrum. With The Freedom Band, he has assembled a bunch of skilled musicians to put on the best damn rock show you can imagine.

Ufomammut

Throughout 8 albums, the Italian powerhouse Ufomammut has developed a sound characterised by lengthy songs centered on repeated heavy riffs coupled with droning vocals, sound effects and synths. The band’s worldwide acclaim has grown wider with each release, to the point where they are now one of doom's most revered acts. The live show is supported by the internationally acclaimed video and graphic art of Malleus, a rock artists’ collective of which band members Poia and Urlo form a part. Their illustrations and animations match the monumental power of the music in sheer visceral impact, making Ufomammut a sensory live experience like no other.

Windhand

For a band who traffic in measured, unhurried riffage, Richmond’s Windhand have moved awfully quickly over the last few years. Founded in 2009, the Virginia quintet have been making waves since the release of their 2010 practice space demo. Their self-titled debut immediately became an underground hit, selling out multiple vinyl presses in a matter of months. But the band has proven to be no flash-in-the-pan internet phenomenon. Throughout 4 albums and incessant touring, they have evolved their Sabbath-with-siren-vocals underpinning with every step they take, leading to some of the most accomplished songwriting to be found in the genre.

Wooden Shjips

Wooden Shjips’ rise to prominence from the psychedelic underground to the rock and roll overground has been a steady sojourn. With each consecutive release, the band has found new ways of transforming heady psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces, bridging the gap between woozy freeness tightly wound simplicity. Guitarist-singer Ripley Johnson formed the band in San Francisco in 2003, originally conceiving the band as a loose collection of untrained musicians that would gather to jam. Settling into a regular line-up, the band became a live sensation as well as gaining more media attention as their work moved from spaced freakouts to to melodically direct songs.

Yawning Man

Yawning Man hail from the arid desert area of Southern California. They have been playing, jamming, and recording since 1986, and are considered to be the originators of the entire “Desert Rock” movement. Nevertheless, it was almost 20 years after the band’s organic beginnings that the world was blessed with a full length debut. Throughout their instrumental cinematic rock landscapes, Yawning Man has always expressed a desire to create and connect landscapes of the real to surreal, the dreams to the drastic. The end (and still on-going) result is the beautiful, swirling and other-worldly music you know as Yawning Man. And then some.

Yonathan Gat

Over the previous decade, Yonatan Gat became known as one of the world's top performers as founder and guitarist of Monotonix, hailed by SPIN as "the most exciting live band in rock’n’roll,” with concerts that quite literally destroyed the border between performer and audience. Banned from playing shows in his home country of Israel and refusing to take part in its mandatory military service, Gat relocated to New York City. He began recording and performing as a bandleader, setting up increasingly ambitious projects that are all manifestations of a ritualistic, improvised, and shamanic musical exploration. Gat has proved himself to be one of the most fascinating experimentalists of our time.
