Brant Bjork

Brant Bjork delivers lush Stoner Rock with balls of steel, winged by vivid solo guitars and his creaking whiskey tinged voice. Once behind the drums for legendary Desert Rock bands Kyuss and Fu Manchu, Brant has since turned himself into a far-out reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix, on a nearly constant world tour to deliver fuzzy awesomeness to the masses. His live show amounts to controlled madness hitting just the right spot between trippy and doomy, smooth and sludgy. The recent live album 'Mankind Woman is a surprisingly funky slice of soulful rock, but nothing beats the pure thrill of seeing the man perform in the flesh.

Cfm - Charles Francis Moothart

If you’re a garage rock junkie, chances are you’ve heard Charles Moothart shred—hard. After being heavily involved in the garage rock scene around Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin, Moothart stepped into the spotlight with the solo alias CFM (short for Charles Francis Moothart). Following a breakup in 2016, he retreated to his home studio and wrote the album 'Still Life of Citrus & Slime'. A year later he returned with 'Dichotomy Desaturated', another heady collection of Nuggets-leaning songs. While both albums were solo efforts, Moothart assembled a touring band of outsiders including high school friend Michael Anderson, along with Tyler Frome and powerhouse drummer Thomas Alvarez (Audacity).

Colour Haze

Formed in the mid-nineties, Colour Haze is one of the oldest German stoner outfits, and one of the flagships of the local scene. Emerging from a sound heavily influenced by Black Sabbath & Grand Funk Railroad on their first records, they evolved from a heavy to a more melodic sound. The lineup has remained unchanged for nearly 20 years: Stefan (guitar & vocals), Manfred (drums) and Philipp (bass) form a power trio that has consistently won the hearts and ears of a loyal fanbase that is ever growing. Since 2003, the band has been releasing all their albums through Stefan's own label “Elektrohasch Schallplatten”, making them a true DIY force.

Crackups

The Crackups are a band of extremes. Insanely fast, but tight as a duck's ass. Extremely loud but with a keen sense of melody. Featuring members from Double Veterans, Priceduifkes, Psycho 44, they gained notoriety through fiercely intense live shows and a defiant punk attitude. After reaching the finals of Belgium's biggest talent hunt Humo's Rock Rally and releasing a bottle rocket of a debut album with 'Animals on Acid', they suddenly disappeared from the scene in 2012. Nowthey are throwing themselves headfirst into a comeback, the likes of which this land has never seen... expect sounds inspired by The Stooges, Black Flag and Devo, mashed into something fiercely unique and original.

Elder

Starting out in a small town in coastal Massachusetts as a shared musical passion between three long-time friends, Elder is the definition of a work in progress. With each new release, the group continues to meld the familiar sounds of Sleep‘s colossal riffage with an ever-evolving vision of soaring melodies and sonic soundscapes. This continuous quest for musical adventure has received praise from the traditional stoner/doom crowd, as well as reaching listeners outside this often insular scene. Their audience will find themselves locked into the trio’s lengthy epics, which toe the line between the chasms of classic stoner metal and mindblowing psychedelia.

Fuzz

Fuzz is Ty Segall (drums/vocals), Charlie Moothart (guitar/vocals), and Chad Ubovich (bass). Theyíre heavy-rock lifers ñ three California-bred dudes who have been refining their riffs and getting weird together since high school which wasn't that long ago, actually). Fuzz was formed in/around 2011 as a collaboration between Segall and Moothart, but it's only within the last year that the pair had sufficient time to guide the band out of side-project limbo and into a recording studio. Since then, they have released two singles, "This Time I Got a Reason" (Trouble In Mind) and "Sleigh Ride" (In the Red). Around the time of the second single, Cosio joined on bass.

Goggs

Ty Segall Ex-Cult's Chris Shaw decided they were going to start a band together when their bands played together in 2013. The band had been in the planning stages for a long time but finally came together in 2015 when they convened in Ty's Los Angeles studio to record an album. Cory Hanson (Wand), Charles Moothart (Fuzz) and Mikal Cronin all got involved at some point. After the addition of Michael Anderson on bass, GØGGS returned in 2018 with 'Pre Strike Sweep', adding a new level of primordial anxiety to their already catastrophic symphony. Here's one West Coast garage supergroup you don't want to miss.

Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids

Revered saxophonist Idris Ackamoor is the founder and leader of the Pyramids, an Afrocentric world music and spiritual jazz group whose music emerges from a fertile creative zone that was mined by Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago and the likes. Their trio of mindbending afro-jazz albums from the 1970s proved highly influential to several generations of artists, but the group disbanded in 1977. Ackamoor threw himself in his work as a cultural ambassador, but after nearly 40 years he reconvened the band in 2016, releasing two much-acclaimed albums on Strut Records and starting a second run as a celebrated touring outfit.

John Garcia

Kyuss, Slo Burn, Unida, Hermano, Vista Chino... after years of fronting famous and infamous desert rock outfits, John Garcia's name has almost become synonymous with the genre. Although the man himself rather wouldn't call what he does “desert rock.” Instead he considers it all to be rock ’n’ roll with different manifestations, which is why he showed up in guest appearances for acts as diverse as Orange Goblin and Karma To Burn, to The Crystal Method and Belgium's own Arsenal. After a more intimate solo affair, the man now has a new plan for 2019: a band project called 'John Garcia And The Band Of Gold' that will take him back where it all started: sweat-dripping hard rocking grooves.

Kikagaku Moyo

Kikagaku Moyo (Japanese for "geometric patterns") are a Tokyo-based psychedelic rock band whose sound incorporates elements of Krautrock, Indian ragas, and acid folk. They released a series of records on Guruguru Brain, a label founded by two members of the band to promote Eastern psychedelic music in the West. With heavy, crushing jams balanced by more contemplative moments, Kikagaku Moyo recalls Japanese psych groups like Acid Mothers Temple and Ghost, as well as their predecessors such as Far East Family Band and the Flower Travellin' Band. Live the band is no less than phenomenal, taking you on a trip to their very own personal universe.

King khan and the shrines

Brewing up a heady mixture of high-spirited rhythm & blues, real-gone psychedelia, and middle-finger-flipping garage rock, King Khan has earned an international reputation as one of the wildest showmen in underground rock. Whether playing with the all-freaks powerhouse that is The Shrines, designing a deck of Tarot cards (Jodorowsky approved!), scoring William Burroughs' archival spoken word recordings or embarking on any other highly extravagant project he will think up next, King Khan is a versatile true artist who just also happens to have a knack for entertaining the shit out of any audience that is put in front of him.

Les Filles de Illighadad

Fatou Seidi Ghali and Alamnou Akrouni are "Les Filles de Illighadad", named after their tiny hometown in a remote part of Niger near the border with Mali. They sing and play a traditional Tuareg drum called the tende, which is also the name of a repertoire of traditional Tuareg folk songs. But it is the distinctive acoustic and electric guitar playing by Fatou that catches eyes and ears all over the world. After a photograph of her playing at a wedding went viral online (female Tuareg guitarists being rare), Christopher Kirkley of Sahel Sounds tracked her down and produced the group's first two albums for the label.

Meatbodies

Chad Ubovich began ripping through the rock scene in 2011 as guitarist for Mikal Cronin and later playing bass in FUZZ with Ty Segall. In between tours, he spent his time recording and playing shows around Los Angeles under the name Chad and the Meatbodies. In 2012, Ty released a tape with Chad’s bedroom recordings on his GOD? Records imprint. The release was well received, and subsequently In The Red took notice of Chad’s crunching, grinding sound and added his band, now simply called Meatbodies to their roster. Over the course of 2 albums, he has emerged as not only a mean riff dealer, but also an accomplished songsmith.

Moon Duo

San Francisco's Moon Duo was formed in 2009 by Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson (Wooden Shjips). Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Throughout the years have consistently expanded on their core sound of motoric beats, synth bass and Ripley's space guitar. This culminated in 2017's double concept album 'Occult Architecture', based on the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang, light vs. dark. As disorienting as the music can be, the eye-scorching visual live show takes it to a whole new outer dimension.

Orange Goblin

In a world gone mad, there are few certainties to cling to. But one thing remains forever unwavering and true: Orange fucking Goblin! Diehard exponents of the noble art of heavy metal since 1995, the London-based quartet have spent the last two decades steadily but surely establishing themselves as one of the UK’s most loved and respected bands. Starting out as one of the most important UK doom bands of the '90s, Goblin has been adding more and more influences to their unique sound, resulting in some of their best work being done over the last few years. 2018's 'The Wolf Bites Back' once again proved there's still a lot of creative fury in the Goblin's spirit.

Osees

It's hard to keep up with John Dwyer. The prolific Westcoast musician is known for dropping albums a mile a minute, occasionally changing the setup of his band to keep the spirit going. For their 19th full-length album, the band formerly known as Thee Oh Sees (and The Oh Sees and OCS and Orinoka Crash Suite and Orange County Sound) are now just the "Oh Sees". That being said, the twin drummer setup just keeps on doing what it does best: providing an explosive backdrop for whatever out-there sound Dwyer comes up with - be it garage, psychrock, manic folk or spaced-out drones. The result is one of the most exciting live bands you can witness nowadays.

Stoned jesus

Ukraine might not be the most obvious place to start a doom metal band, but that is exactly what Igor Sidorenko decided to do when he was stuck in a rut back in 2007. The band's progress since then has proven him right: from their humble beginnings in the local metal underground, Stoned Jesus has moved on to become one of the current scene darlings. It might have something to do with the tight songwriting, solidly based in traditional stoner doom but touched by Igor's many influences and prog background. No wonder Napalm Records wanted a piece of that, releasing their breakthrough album 'Pilgrims' in 2018.

The Glücks

After an insane roadtrip, The Glücks got together as a couple and as a band. Alek and Tina bonded over a love for all things dirty and fuzzy: The Cramps, Stooges, Pebbles/Nuggets garage and punk. Add to that an urge to get away from the “shithole” they grew up in, and you’ve got the recipe for some good infernal rock’n’roll. Even with the mother of all hangovers, the band nailed a full album of eight songs in 2 days. The second album topped that with 11 songs recorded in the same amount of time. 'Run Amok' from 2018 is their most accomplished outing to date, a vibrant heartfelt piece of work filled to the brim with songs for the underdogs, the generation denied... the generation undefined.

The Obsessed

The Obsessed was formed in the late 1970s in Potomac, Maryland by legendary guitarist Scott “Wino” Wenrich. Since then, the band has weathered many storms, with several breakups, label and lineup changes and reunions, until their full-time return in 2016 signing to Relapse Records to record their first studio album in over 20 years. In the meanwhile, their reputation had grown to truly legendary proportions, being cited as a true pioneer in the thriving doom scene. Now performing once again as three piece featuring Wino alongside new members Reid Raley and Brian Costantino, The Obsessed sounds heavier and more relevant than ever before.

Ty Segall and the Freedom band

Practically born in the surf of Laguna Beach, and transplanted to the garage-punk nexus of the Bay Area, one-man dynamo Ty Segall has been at the forefront of the region's thriving garage scene for more than a decade. Throughout his prolific career, he has constantly shifted projects and moods, ranging from eclectic pop to fuzzed-out noise to acoustic folk. On his latest couple of albums, he seems to have boiled down all these influences into a style that is unmistakably his own, while effortlessly moving across the musical spectrum. With The Freedom Band, he has assembled a bunch of skilled musicians to put on the best damn rock show you can imagine.

Windhand

For a band who traffic in measured, unhurried riffage, Richmond’s Windhand have moved awfully quickly over the last few years. Founded in 2009, the Virginia quintet have been making waves since the release of their 2010 practice space demo. Their self-titled debut immediately became an underground hit, selling out multiple vinyl presses in a matter of months. But the band has proven to be no flash-in-the-pan internet phenomenon. Throughout 4 albums and incessant touring, they have evolved their Sabbath-with-siren-vocals underpinning with every step they take, leading to some of the most accomplished songwriting to be found in the genre.

Wooden Shjips

Wooden Shjips’ rise to prominence from the psychedelic underground to the rock and roll overground has been a steady sojourn. With each consecutive release, the band has found new ways of transforming heady psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces, bridging the gap between woozy freeness tightly wound simplicity. Guitarist-singer Ripley Johnson formed the band in San Francisco in 2003, originally conceiving the band as a loose collection of untrained musicians that would gather to jam. Settling into a regular line-up, the band became a live sensation as well as gaining more media attention as their work moved from spaced freakouts to to melodically direct songs.
